Ni no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi (二ノ国 漆黒の魔導士) for the Nintendo DS is the original Japanese-exclusive version of what would later become known worldwide as Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Developed by Level-5 in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, this version launched in 2010 and is a unique experience distinct from its later PlayStation 3 counterpart.

This beautifully crafted RPG tells the story of Oliver, a young boy who journeys between two worlds in hopes of bringing back his mother. With animation sequences by Studio Ghibli and a soundtrack composed by Joe Hisaishi, the game blends heartfelt storytelling with a whimsical aesthetic that mirrors the charm of Ghibli films.

The DS version is known for its use of the physical Magic Master book (included in the original Japanese release), which players use in tandem with the game to cast spells, decipher codes, and explore the game’s richly detailed world. The combat system mixes real-time and turn-based elements and features a monster-catching mechanic that predates the familiar familiars seen in the PS3 release.

Note that this is the Japanese-language version and requires Japanese reading ability or reference materials to play. It’s a treasured collectible for fans of Studio Ghibli, Level-5 RPGs, and unique Japan-only releases.
