Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition is the definitive enhanced version of the original Generation I Pokémon games, specifically modified to more closely mirror the Pokémon animated series. Developed by Game Freak and released for the Game Boy (with enhanced support for the Game Boy Color), the title deviates from Red and Blue by forcing the player to start with a unique Pikachu that refuses to stay in its Poké Ball. This Pikachu follows the player across the overworld and features a "Friendship" mechanic, where its mood changes based on how the player treats it.
The gameplay is technically enhanced for the Game Boy Color, featuring a specialized color palette that changes depending on the city or route the player is currently exploring. While the core objective remains the same—collecting eight Gym Badges and defeating the Elite Four—Pokémon Yellow introduces several script changes: the iconic Team Rocket duo, Jessie and James, appear in multiple scripted battles, and players have the unique opportunity to obtain all three original starter Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle) within a single playthrough. The game also features the Pikachu's Beach mini-game, which was originally accessible only through a special Nintendo event but can be played via the Game Boy Printer or specific modern hardware.
