Description

In Section-Z, you take on the role of the original Captain Commando—Capcom’s early corporate mascot—on a high-stakes mission to infiltrate the interstellar fortress Balangool. Your objective is to penetrate the base’s 60 heavily guarded sectors and destroy the L-Brain, a malevolent supercomputer plotting to conquer the solar system. Unlike its linear arcade predecessor, this 1987 NES conversion is a massive, non-linear shmup-maze that requires strategic navigation and often a hand-drawn map to survive.

The gameplay features a unique control scheme: the B button fires left while the A button fires right, allowing you to fend off enemies from both sides without turning around. The base is divided into three large regions, each concluding with a boss fight against a core generator or a massive mechanical guardian. To aid your descent, you can collect power-ups like the Megasmasher and Flashbuster, or utilize "Special Technical Skills" (STS) like the Crash Ball and Barrier Shield by spending energy points. The game’s true challenge lies in its branching paths; at the end of most sections, you must choose between two portals, some of which may loop you back to earlier areas or lead to deadly dead ends.
