Fatal Frame III: The Tormented - PlayStation 2 is a survival horror game following photographer Rei Kurosawa, who is haunted by grief after the death of her fiancé. After encountering his image during a photography assignment, Rei begins dreaming of the mysterious Manor of Sleep, where a supernatural tattoo slowly spreads across her body as the boundary between dreams and reality begins to collapse.
Players explore haunted environments, solve puzzles, uncover journals and photographs, and confront hostile spirits using the Camera Obscura. Combat rewards careful framing and precise timing, with stronger shots possible when ghosts draw closer. The game features multiple playable characters, including Miku Hinasaki and Kei Amakura, each with different abilities that affect exploration and combat throughout the manor.
Developed and published by Tecmo in North America in 2005, Fatal Frame III: The Tormented is the third main entry in the Fatal Frame series. Its interconnected story draws on characters and events from the first two games while expanding the series’ themes of loss, memory, and supernatural curses, making it a significant PlayStation 2 horror release.
