Description

Gradius - Famicom, released in Japan as グラディウス, is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that places players in control of the Vic Viper spacecraft on a mission to destroy the forces of the Bacterian empire. The game sends players through a series of horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy formations, environmental hazards, and large boss encounters.

Gameplay is built around the distinctive Power Meter system, which lets players collect capsules from defeated enemies and choose when to activate upgrades such as Speed Up, Missiles, Double, Laser, and Options. Managing these upgrades is central to survival, especially after losing a life and restarting with reduced firepower. Each stage introduces new enemy patterns and obstacles, rewarding memorization, quick reactions, and careful positioning.

Developed and published by Konami, Gradius was released for the Japanese Family Computer in 1986 as a home adaptation of the influential 1985 arcade game. Its customizable power-up system, iconic Vic Viper, memorable stage design, and importance to the evolution of scrolling shooters make it a standout title for shoot-'em-up fans and Famicom collectors.
