Metroid: Samus Returns - Nintendo 3DS is a side-scrolling action-adventure that reimagines the 1991 Game Boy title Metroid II: Return of Samus. Bounty hunter Samus Aran travels to planet SR388 on a mission to eliminate the dangerous Metroid species, exploring a hostile underground world filled with alien creatures, hidden passages, ancient technology, and increasingly powerful Metroid evolutions.
Gameplay combines exploration, platforming, combat, and ability-based progression across interconnected environments. New mechanics include 360-degree Free Aim for precise targeting and a Melee Counter that lets Samus interrupt certain enemy attacks. Players also gain Aeion abilities that consume a rechargeable energy meter, providing powers such as enhanced scanning and defensive protection. Familiar upgrades including the Morph Ball, missiles, bombs, and beam weapons gradually open access to new areas and hidden collectibles.
Developed by MercurySteam and Nintendo EPD and published by Nintendo in 2017, Metroid: Samus Returns brought the series back to its 2D exploration roots with modernized controls, 3D visuals, and expanded combat. Its atmospheric world, challenging boss encounters, and updated interpretation of a classic Metroid adventure make it an appealing choice for series fans and Nintendo 3DS collectors.
