In the 2006 remake of Final Fantasy III, the "lost" chapter of the franchise finally arrived in North America with a complete 3D overhaul. While the 1990 original featured nameless protagonists, this version introduces four distinct orphans—Luneth, Arc, Refia, and Ingus—who are chosen by the Wind Crystal to become the Warriors of Light. Their mission takes them across a floating continent and a flooded surface world to stop the mage Xande from plunging the world into eternal darkness.
The game is famous for pioneering the Job System, allowing you to switch your characters' classes at any time to suit the challenge ahead. Starting as Freelancers, your party can eventually master over 20 roles, including classic Knights and Mages, as well as unique classes like the Geomancer and Dragoon. The DS version adds strategic depth with a "Job Transition Phase," a temporary stat penalty when switching jobs, and the Mognet system—a wireless mail service used to unlock secret sidequests, the legendary Onion Knight job, and the game’s ultimate superboss, the Iron Giant.
