In the 1988 Double Dragon, martial arts master Billy Lee tears through the post-apocalyptic streets of New York to rescue his girlfriend, Marian, from the Black Warriors gang. This NES conversion famously reinterprets the story: while you spend four stages hunting the machine-gun-toting Willy, the true "Shadow Boss" is revealed to be Billy’s own brother, Jimmy Lee.
Unlike the arcade original, the NES version features an RPG-style leveling system. You begin with only basic punches, but as you earn "Hearts" through combat, you unlock iconic techniques like the elbow smash, hair pull, and jump kick. While it lacks the arcade’s 2-player co-op, it includes a unique Mode B—a one-on-one fighting game where you can play as enemies like the powerhouse Abobo or the agile Chin.
