Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for the Game Boy expands on Mario’s handheld adventures with a larger world, more varied levels, and a new rival. The story begins when Mario returns to his home only to discover it has been taken over by Wario, a greedy newcomer who claims the land as his own. To reclaim his castle, Mario must travel across multiple themed zones and collect six golden coins that unlock the final confrontation.
Each area offers a distinct setting, including Space Zone, Tree Zone, Pumpkin Zone, and Mario Zone, which recreates familiar elements from Mario’s past adventures. Gameplay builds on classic side-scrolling platforming with tighter controls, hidden secrets, and new power-ups such as the Super Carrot, which grants Mario the ability to glide through the air. Enemy designs are more expressive, and level layouts encourage exploration, rewarding players who search for alternate paths and hidden exits.
Often referred to simply as Super Mario Land 2, this Game Boy release is notable for introducing Wario, who would later become a major character in the Mario universe.
