In Grabbed by the Ghoulies, the legendary studio Rare made its high-profile debut on the Microsoft Xbox after leaving Nintendo. You play as Cooper, a teenager who must venture into the haunted Ghoulhaven Hall to rescue his girlfriend, Amber, after she is kidnapped by the eccentric Baron von Ghoul. The story is told through vibrant, comic-book-style panels and features Rare’s signature humor, with a cast of oddball characters like the flatulent butler Crivens and the skeletal assistant Mr. Ribs.
The gameplay is a unique "room-to-room" beat 'em up where the combat is entirely controlled by the analog sticks rather than buttons—flicking the right stick toward an enemy initiates an attack. Each of the 100 rooms presents a specific Challenge you must meet to unlock the exit, such as "Don't get hit," "Defeat all imps using only your hands," or "Don't defeat any mummies". If you break a rule or run out of time, the Grim Reaper appears; if he touches you, it’s an instant game over. To survive, you can use over 100 destructible household objects as weapons, from chairs and billiard cues to a garlic-spraying blunderbuss.
