Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is the inaugural high-definition entry for the franchise, developed by Insomniac Games and released in 2007. As the first chapter of the "Future" saga, it serves as a soft reboot for the series' narrative, delving deep into the mystery of Ratchet's origins as a Lombax and the disappearance of his race. The duo is forced to escape to the Polaris Galaxy after an ambush by Emperor Percival Tachyon, a tyrant seeking to eradicate the last of the Lombaxes.

The gameplay returns to the series' classic roots of platforming and explosive combat while introducing significant mechanical updates. A major addition is the Device system—non-upgradeable support items like the Groovitron (which forces enemies to dance) or the Transmorpher. Weapons can now be upgraded beyond simple experience gain using Raritanium to buy specific stat boosts in a specialized upgrade tree. The game also features specialized Clank sections where the companion commands mysterious creatures called the Zoni to solve time-based puzzles, as well as on-rails space combat sequences piloting the Aphelion.

Technically, Tools of Destruction was a showcase for early PS3 hardware, targeting a fluid 60 frames per second at a native 720p resolution. It was one of the first titles to fully utilize the SIXAXIS motion controls for navigating free-fall sequences, guiding the "Robo-Wing" flight paths, and hacking security terminals. While it features cinematic visuals that mirror a CG film, it is notable for being released prior to the implementation of the PlayStation Trophy system; consequently, it does not support trophies. The audio experience is powered by Dolby Digital 5.1, featuring a sweeping orchestral score by David Bergeaud and authentic lip-synced dialogue for NPCs during real-time gameplay.
