Description
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for PlayStation 5 is an emotional dark-fantasy RPG from France’s Sandfall Interactive, set in a Belle Époque–inspired world torn apart by a mysterious phenomenon called “Gommage.” Step into the shoes of Gustave and his party as they embark on Expedition 33 to confront the Paintress, an eerie entity whose countdown threat erases those over a certain age.
The narrative is powerfully brought to life by a star-studded voice cast: Charlie Cox (Daredevil) plays Gustave, Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) voices the enigmatic Renoir, and acclaimed performers Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3) and Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI) deliver standout performances as Maëlle and Verso.
Clair Obscur blends strategic turn-based combat—complete with timed dodges, parries, and quick-time events—with tight, exploration-driven level design reminiscent of classic JRPGs, yet infused with fresh mechanics that respect player agency.
Players control a dynamic party of volunteers from Lumière bound by fate and mystery. Starting with Gustave's personal loss, the group battles through surreal landscapes—underwater ruins, red-hued forests, and classic monstrosities—uncovering truths about the Paintress while experiencing shocking narrative twists and emotional depth
Critical Reception & Impact

- Commercial success: over 3.3 million copies sold within 33 days—solidifying Game-of-the-Year contender status
- Critics praised its elegant fusion of JRPG depth and real-time responsiveness, along with narrative restraint and pace
