Final Fantasy VIII - PlayStation is a story-driven Japanese RPG that follows Squall Leonhart, a student at Balamb Garden training to become a member of the elite mercenary force known as SeeD. After graduating, Squall and his companions become drawn into a conflict involving the nation of Galbadia, the sorceress Edea, and a larger threat that reaches far beyond their initial military assignments.
Gameplay combines exploration, turn-based battles, character progression, and extensive customization through the Junction system. Players equip powerful Guardian Forces to characters and junction magic to individual statistics, allowing attributes such as strength, health, and defense to be tailored in different ways. Magic can be drawn from enemies and locations, while Guardian Forces provide summons and additional abilities. The game also features Triple Triad, a collectible card game that can reward players with useful items and resources.
Developed and published by Square in 1999, Final Fantasy VIII followed the success of Final Fantasy VII with a more realistic visual style, cinematic presentation, and distinctive approach to character development.
