New Super Mario Bros. - Nintendo DS is a side-scrolling platformer that returns Mario to the classic run-and-jump style of the original Super Mario games while introducing updated visuals and new abilities. Mario sets out to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser Jr., traveling through themed worlds filled with enemies, moving platforms, hidden areas, and familiar Mushroom Kingdom hazards.
Gameplay combines traditional platforming with power-ups such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Mega Mushroom, Mini Mushroom, and Blue Shell. Players progress through eight worlds, collect hidden Star Coins, discover alternate exits, and unlock additional routes across the world map. The game also includes a separate multiplayer mode where Mario and Luigi compete against each other, along with a selection of touch-screen mini-games.
Developed and published by Nintendo in 2006, New Super Mario Bros. marked the return of a new mainline 2D Mario platformer after more than a decade. Its blend of classic level design, modern presentation, new power-ups, and portable play helped establish a successful new branch of the Mario series and makes it an appealing choice for Nintendo DS collectors.
