Dead Rising 4 marks the return of fan-favorite photojournalist Frank West in an all-new chapter set 16 years after the original Willamette outbreak. Now a college professor, Frank is lured back to Willamette, Colorado, during the Christmas season to investigate a mysterious military compound and a fresh zombie outbreak at the newly constructed Willamette Memorial Megaplex. The narrative explores government conspiracies and genetic mutations as Frank balances a rocky partnership with his student, Vick Chu, while tracking a new, more aggressive "Evo" zombie strain.
The gameplay emphasizes creative carnage in a massive open-world sandbox, famously removing the series' signature countdown timer to encourage unrestricted exploration. New to the franchise are EXO Suits, military-grade exoskeletons that grant Frank superhuman strength and the ability to wield heavy environmental objects like parking meters as weapons. The core loop revolves around scavenging "Scrap" currency and utilizing blueprints to craft "insane" combo weapons and vehicles. Frank’s camera returns with enhanced technical modes, including a Spectrum Analyzer for finding hidden clues and a selfie mode for capturing gruesome holiday moments.
Technically, the Xbox One version targets a solid 30fps while managing hundreds of simultaneous zombies on-screen. On the base Xbox One, the game renders at a native 900p resolution, while the Xbox One X Enhanced version offers a significant upgrade to native 4K with HDR10 support. While the main story is strictly single-player, the game features a separate 4-player online co-op mode consisting of multiple "Episodes" where players can choose from four unique characters—Issac, Jessa, Jordan, and Connor—to complete randomized objectives within the mall.
