Waterworld - Virtual Boy
Waterworld for the Nintendo Virtual Boy adapts the post-apocalyptic setting of the 1995 film into a unique 3D action experience exclusive to the short-lived handheld. Set on an ocean-covered Earth where survivors cling to floating atolls, the game puts players in control of the Mariner’s trimaran as he battles to protect humanity’s last resources from the ruthless Smokers.
The gameplay centers on arena-style combat, with players navigating their ship in a 3D environment while defending vulnerable atoll citizens from waves of enemy attackers. Armed with harpoons and other weapons, you must sink Smoker boats, fend off aircraft, and rescue civilians before they are carried away. The Virtual Boy’s stereoscopic display adds depth to the action, making enemies appear to rush toward the screen as you maneuver and attack.
While the game does not follow the film’s narrative closely, it captures the central theme of survival on the high seas, with nonstop combat and escalating difficulty. The focus on high scores and endurance makes it more arcade-like than story-driven, challenging players to improve their reflexes and strategy with each playthrough.
As one of the few officially released titles for the Virtual Boy—and among the harder ones to find—Waterworld has become a notable piece of collecting history. Though its gameplay is simple, its rarity, unique presentation, and connection to the cult-favorite film give it a special place in the Virtual Boy’s small but memorable library.
