In Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013, the long-running hunting franchise leans heavily into the "survival horror" genre, focusing on high-stakes encounters with aggressive predators. The story centers on Jacob Marshall, a man haunted by a tragic grizzly bear attack in Alaska that claimed his father's life years earlier. When Jacob travels to Africa to find his estranged brother, Luke, he is pulled into a hunt for a legendary "Black Lion" that has been terrorizing local villages, forcing him to confront both nature’s deadliest beasts and his own past.
The gameplay utilizes the Prowler AI system, which allows animals to form tactical packs to flank and ambush the player, making them far more dangerous than typical game. Combat often features the "Killer Instinct" mechanic—a slow-motion reaction window that triggers when a predator pounces from behind, allowing you to turn and land a fatal shot before being mauled. While the game supports the standard Wii Remote and Zapper, it was famously bundled with the Top Shot Fearmaster wireless gun. Note for Wii players: Unlike the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, the Wii Fearmaster does not include the biometric heart-rate sensors; it only utilizes motion sensors for aiming stability.
