Dark Souls II is a haunting action-RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Games in March 2014. Set in the fallen kingdom of Drangleic, the narrative follows a "Bearer of the Curse" seeking a cure for their undead state by collecting the four Great Souls to take the Throne of Want. Technically, this installment moved away from the Interconnected World design of its predecessor, opting for a hub-and-spoke model anchored by the coastal town of Majula, allowing for immediate fast-travel between checkpoints.
The gameplay introduces several mechanical evolutions, most notably Power Stancing, which allows players to dual-wield similar weapon types with a unique, expanded move set. Combat is governed by the Agility sub-stat (derived from Adaptability and Attunement), which directly dictates the number of invincibility frames during rolls and the speed of using items like Estus Flasks. To heighten the stakes, the game utilizes a Hollowing penalty where a player's maximum HP reduces by 5% with each death, capping at 50% unless restored with a Human Effigy. Additionally, most enemies in this version will permanently stop respawning after being killed roughly 12 times, theoretically allowing players to clear a path to difficult bosses.
Technically, the PlayStation 3 version targets a 720p resolution (upscaled from 1024x720) with a variable frame rate that typically hovers around 20–30fps. Notably, the "Scholar of the First Sin" edition on PS3 is merely a bundle of the base game and its three DLC chapters (Sunken, Old Iron, and Ivory King); it does not include the enemy placement remixes or graphical upgrades found on PS4/PS5. As of March 31, 2024, official online servers for the PS3 version have been permanently shut down; while the game remains fully playable offline, features like summoning players, invasions, and community messages are no longer available.
