Defender is a complete 3D reimagining of the 1980 arcade masterpiece, developed by 7 Studios and published by Midway Games. Released in late 2002, the title transitions the classic side-scrolling formula into a high-intensity third-person space shooter that pits players against the Manti—a relentless insectoid alien race threatening human colonies across the solar system. While maintaining the core "defend and rescue" objective of its predecessor, the PS2 version introduces deep tactical layers, including a full cinematic campaign and diverse mission objectives that go beyond simple extermination.
The gameplay centers on a unique hybrid of aerial combat and light strategy. Players can pilot six distinct spacecraft, ranging from agile light fighters to heavy bombers, each customizable with earned credits for upgrades to shields, engines, and advanced weaponry. A critical strategic element involves ground unit management; by rescuing colonists and delivering them to specific bases, players can "purchase" or build tanks and missile launchers to help hold tactical choke points. The original arcade version of Defender is also included as a selectable bonus, offering a technical bridge between the franchise's 16-bit roots and its 21st-century update.
Technically, the PlayStation 2 version supports 480p progressive scan and features high-fidelity Dolby Digital 5.1 audio for an immersive space-warfare environment.
