Description
Description
Digging for Dinosaurs is an edutainment title developed by CokeM Interactive and published by Scholastic for the Nintendo DS in November 2010. Designed specifically for young explorers aged 5 to 8, the game transforms the handheld console into a portable paleontology kit. The core experience is based on facts and theories of modern paleontology, where players are guided by a friendly professor character to unearth the secrets of the prehistoric world.
The gameplay is technically divided into three main phases: discovery, excavation, and assembly. Using the interactive touchscreen, players visit dig sites around the world to extract fossils from various landscapes. Once a fossil is cleaned and assembled, it unlocks a specific mini-game adventure where the player takes control of that legendary creature—ranging from a Triceratops battling a T-Rex to an Eoraptor hunting its prey. The game features 21 different dinosaur species, and each discovery includes educational content intended to separate scientific fact from common myths.
Technically, Digging for Dinosaurs is optimized for its young target audience with clear audio directions and intuitive stylus controls that minimize the need for complex button inputs. Points earned in the "Hall of Dinosaurs" through mini-games are used to travel to new dig sites, creating a progression loop that encourages repeated play. While it is a single-player focused experience, the game provides a persistent gallery where players can collect cards and reference dinosaur facts they have unlocked. As of 2026, the game is highly compatible across the entire DS family and the Nintendo 3DS via backward compatibility.
