In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the series made its legendary console debut, bringing a level of open-world freedom previously unseen on hardware. You arrive as a nameless prisoner in the port town of Seyda Neen, sent by the Emperor to fulfill an ancient prophecy as the Nerevarine. Set on the alien, volcanic island of Vvardenfell, the game is famous for its "hands-off" approach: there are no quest markers or fast-travel menus (outside of Silt Striders and boats), forcing you to rely on a hand-written journal and NPC directions to find your way.
The gameplay is built on a "learn-by-doing" system where your skills—from Long Blade to Acrobatics—improve the more you use them. You can join dozens of factions, including the Great Houses (Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni) or the mystical Morag Tong assassins. The Xbox version was a technical marvel for 2002, though it was notorious for long loading screens. In 2026, however, these issues are a thing of the past; thanks to backward compatibility, the game runs with nearly instant load times and a 16x resolution increase on Xbox Series X, making the ash storms of Red Mountain look sharper than ever.
