Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly - PlayStation 2 is a survival horror game centered on twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who become trapped in an abandoned village haunted by restless spirits. As the sisters uncover the village’s history and a disturbing ritual tied to twin sacrifice, players guide Mio through dark homes, shrines, forests, and other eerie locations while searching for a way to escape.
Instead of relying on conventional weapons, players defend themselves with the Camera Obscura, a supernatural camera capable of damaging and capturing ghosts. Combat rewards careful timing and close-range photographs, while exploration focuses on finding keys, solving environmental puzzles, collecting notes, and piecing together the events that destroyed the village. Different film types and camera upgrades can improve effectiveness against increasingly dangerous spirits.
Developed and published by Tecmo in North America in 2003, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is the second entry in the Fatal Frame series. Its isolated village setting, twin-focused story, photography-based combat, and heavy emphasis on atmosphere and psychological horror make it one of the most distinctive survival horror releases on PlayStation 2.
