In Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GRAW), the original Xbox version is a fascinating "alternative" to its more famous Xbox 360 counterpart. While it shares the same story—Captain Scott Mitchell leads a Ghost squad into a chaotic 2013 Mexico City to rescue the U.S. and Mexican presidents—it was built on a completely different engine (Unreal Engine 2) to suit the older hardware. This resulted in a game that feels more like a direct evolution of Ghost Recon 2 than the "next-gen" tactical overhaul found on the 360.
The gameplay contains several major departures from the 360 version. Most notably, the original Xbox version is first-person only, lacking the over-the-shoulder third-person view and cover-snapping system of the 360. Additionally, instead of commanding a full four-man squad, you are paired with only one AI teammate. To compensate for the smaller squad, the game features exclusive heavy weaponry not found in the 360 version, specifically the M109 anti-tank grenade launcher and the Zeus anti-tank missile launcher. While it lacks some tactical depth, it is praised for its "run-and-gun" intensity and unique mission pacing.
