Killzone 2 is a landmark first-person shooter developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, serving as a flagship technical showcase for the PlayStation 3. Set two years after the original Helghast invasion, the narrative shifts the conflict to the hostile home planet of Helghan. Players take the role of Sev, a member of an elite ISA unit tasked with invading the capital city of Pyrrhus to capture the Helghast leader, Emperor Visari, and end the intergalactic war. The game is renowned for its "gritty" hard sci-fi atmosphere, featuring a desolate world defined by dark clouds, fierce winds, and oppressive industrial landscapes.

The gameplay is technically distinct for its "heavy" momentum-based movement and a refined first-person cover system that allows players to lean out and take pot-shots from safety. Beyond standard military firearms, the arsenal features unique "deadly toys" such as the Bolt Gun, which pins enemies to walls, and the high-voltage Electricity Gun. The title also utilizes the SIXAXIS motion controller for tactile in-game actions, such as physically twisting the pad to unscrew valves or plant explosive charges. For replayability, the game includes a "Skirmish" mode that allows for offline practice against advanced AI bots.

Technically, Killzone 2 was a pioneer in using deferred rendering on consoles, enabling a huge number of dynamic lights and cinematic effects like motion blur and film grain. It runs at a native 720p resolution with a target of 30fps and supports 7.1 LPCM surround sound for location-specific audio. The revolutionary "Warzone" multiplayer supports up to 32 players and features dynamically shifting objectives—such as assassination, search and retrieve, and king of the hill—that change mid-match without returning to a lobby. Players can choose from six specialized classes, including the Tactician for setting spawn points and the Saboteur for disguising as the enemy.
