Legacy of Kain: Defiance is the fifth and final chapter of the dark fantasy saga, developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos Interactive. Released in late 2003, it serves as the ultimate collision of the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver storylines, allowing players for the first time ever to control both Kain and Raziel within a single game. The narrative follows the two protagonists as they navigate the corrupted world of Nosgoth across different time periods, attempting to defy their prophesied fates and the manipulations of the Elder God.
The gameplay shifts the series toward a more visceral, "Devil May Cry" style action-adventure experience, featuring a refined combat system that emphasizes aerial juggles, multi-enemy attacks, and over-the-top combos. Both characters utilize their respective versions of the Soul Reaver blade, which can be enhanced with elemental properties like Fire, Dark, and Light to solve environmental puzzles and unlock new combat moves. While they share basic mechanics, Kain possesses superior telekinetic strength to manipulate the environment, whereas Raziel retains the ability to shift between the material and spectral realms to bypass obstacles. To maintain health, Kain must feed on the blood of his victims, while Raziel continues his cycle of devouring souls.
Technically, the PlayStation 2 version is notable for its move from a player-controlled camera to a fixed cinematic camera system designed to heighten the game's dramatic, novel-like atmosphere. The title supports Dolby Pro Logic II for immersive surround sound, which highlights the series' legendary voice acting and orchestral score. On the PS2, the game utilizes the console's Emotion Engine to deliver high-quality character models and detailed gothic architecture at a stable frame rate, typically targeting 30fps at a native 480i resolution. Saving progress requires approximately 170KB of space on a standard 8MB Memory Card.
