In The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, EA Redwood Shores delivered a "Final Fantasy-style" RPG that remains the only turn-based epic in the Tolkien gaming library. You play as Berethor, a Captain of Gondor searching for Boromir, who eventually leads a band of six original heroes. Their journey runs parallel to the Fellowship, allowing you to witness iconic moments—like the Battle of Helm’s Deep and the fall of the Balrog—from a new perspective alongside the film's cast.
The gameplay features a Conditional Turn-Based (CTB) system nearly identical to Final Fantasy X, where turn order is dictated by a character’s Speed attribute. You manage a three-person party, each with deep skill trees covering melee, magic (leadership), and passive abilities. A standout feature is "Evil Mode," which unlocks after you clear an area; it allows you to play as Sauron’s forces—including Orcs, Trolls, and even the Witch-king—to defeat your own party in a series of challenge battles.
