Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (known in Japan as The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold) is the definitive 2D fighting game sequel developed by Arc System Works and Atlus, released for the PlayStation 3 in late 2014. Set just days after the original Arena, the narrative concludes the "P-1 Climax" saga as a mysterious red fog envelopes the town of Inaba and the cast of Persona 3 and Persona 4 unite to stop a new threat: the dual-katana-wielding Sho Minazuki. Technically, this sequel serves as a massive expansion, nearly doubling the original roster and refining the "anime fighter" mechanics for a more competitive environment.

The gameplay introduces Shadow Types for most characters—alternate versions that trade defensive options (like Burst) for higher offensive potential and the "Shadow Fury" state, which allows for infinite SP usage for a limited time. New characters join the fray, including fan-favorites Junpei Iori, Yukari Takeba, and Ken Amada, alongside the brand-new Sho. Combat is further deepened by the S-Hold system, enabling players to charge up certain special moves for enhanced properties. The title also includes the Golden Arena Mode, a dungeon-crawling RPG hybrid where players level up their favorite fighter, assign stat points, and unlock unique perks to survive increasingly difficult floors.

On the PlayStation 3, Ultimax targets a flawless 60 frames per second at a native 720p resolution, ensuring the high-precision inputs required for "Airdashes" and "Fatal Recoveries" remain consistent. Unlike the original Persona 4 Arena, this sequel is region-free, allowing players to play physical copies from any territory on any PS3 console. While the official online servers technically remain active as of 2026, the PS3 community is largely sparse; however, the game supports peer-to-peer matchmaking, meaning you can still play lag-free matches if you coordinate directly with a partner. For those interested in the full narrative, the original game's story mode is available as a DLC expansion within this version.
