In Pirates of the Caribbean, the original Xbox received a deep, open-world action RPG that was originally developed as Sea Dogs II before being rebranded to tie in with the 2003 Disney film. You play as Captain Nathaniel Hawk, a privateer caught in the middle of a war between European powers. While the game features the legendary Black Pearl and a narrator voiced by Keira Knightley, its story is entirely independent of the movie’s plot, focusing instead on Hawk’s journey to stop a French invasion and uncover an ancient treasure.
The gameplay is split into two robust halves: Land and Sea. On land, you explore colonial towns, hire officers in taverns, and engage in third-person swordplay to level up your skills. At sea, the game transforms into a detailed sailing simulator where you must manage wind direction, choose between different ammo types (like chain-shot or grapeshot), and command a fleet of up to four ships. Despite its "Disney" branding, the game is famously difficult, with a complex economy and a reputation system that tracks your allegiances to the English, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese empires.
