Spore Creatures is a science-fiction adventure and simulation RPG developed by Griptonite Games (Foundation 9) and published by Electronic Arts for the Nintendo DS in September 2008. Unlike the sprawling "evolution of a species" scope of its PC counterpart, the DS version focuses on a linear, story-driven quest where players control a single creature named Oogie. The narrative follows Oogie across the galaxy to rescue its companion, Little Oogie, from the sinister scientist Gar'Skuther, who is infecting various worlds with mysterious diseases.
The gameplay centers on exploration and creature customization across six unique planets, including Tapti, Pangu, and Zencrie. Players gather new body parts—such as mouths, eyes, and limbs—by helping friendly nests or defeating hostile ones in combat. The Creature Creator on the DS utilizes a "Body Point" budget that increases as the player levels up their "Intelligence," allowing for more complex designs with up to 11 total parts. Combat and social interactions are handled via stylus-based mini-games; players slash the screen to attack or rub the touchscreen to "cuddle" and befriend other species.
Technically, Spore Creatures utilizes a vibrant 2.5D visual style, combining 3D creature models with colorful, tiered 2D environments. The game makes extensive use of the DS Touch Screen for picking up objects, navigating terrain, and executing "Bio-Powers"—special abilities granted by specific body parts. While the original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection features (which allowed players to share creatures via the "Sporepedia") have been defunct for years, the core single-player adventure remains fully operational. Additionally, the game supports local wireless multiplayer for up to two players to showcase their custom creations.
