The Getaway is a gritty, cinematic action-adventure title developed by Team Soho and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in late 2002, the game is technically remarkable for its 1:1 photorealistic recreation of over 10 square miles of Central London, including iconic landmarks like Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace. The narrative follows two protagonists—reformed bank robber Mark Hammond and rogue detective Frank Carter—whose storylines intersect as they navigate the violent underworld of London's organized crime syndicates.
The gameplay is defined by its ultra-minimalist technical philosophy, featuring no on-screen HUD (heads-up display) to maintain a movie-like experience. Instead of health bars or mini-maps, players must observe physical cues: Hammond will visibly limp and bleed when injured, requiring him to lean against walls to slowly recover health. Vehicle navigation is handled through an innovative dynamic indicator system, where the car's blinkers automatically flash left or right to guide players toward their current objective. The game features over 60 licensed vehicles with realistic damage modeling and high-stakes third-person gunplay utilizing a cover-based shooting mechanic.
