Description
In The Hobbit (2003), players experience a faithful, colorful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel, predating the Peter Jackson films by nearly a decade. You play as Bilbo Baggins, recruited by Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. Unlike the darker, combat-heavy Lord of the Rings games of the era, The Hobbit plays like a classic "Zelda-clone" action-adventure, emphasizing platforming, exploration, and puzzle-solving across iconic locations like the Shire, Mirkwood, and Lake-town.
The gameplay centers on Bilbo’s unique equipment: he carries a walking stick for wide-reaching attacks and a signature pole-jump to reach high ledges, and later acquires Sting, a glowing elven blade better suited for hack-and-slash combat. Bilbo also uses throwing stones that can be aimed in a first-person perspective to trigger switches or stun goblins. Of course, the One Ring is a core mechanic, allowing you to turn invisible to sneak past trolls and powerful enemies, though its power is limited by a regenerating meter.
