The Hunt for Red October - Game Boy is an action game based on the 1990 film and Tom Clancy’s Cold War submarine thriller. Players take control of the Soviet submarine Red October as it attempts to cross dangerous waters while avoiding or confronting hostile military forces during its journey toward the United States.
Gameplay takes place primarily from a side-scrolling perspective, with players navigating the submarine through underwater environments while avoiding obstacles and engaging enemy vessels. The Red October can use torpedoes and other weapons to defend itself against submarines, ships, and additional threats encountered during each mission. Success depends on careful movement, managing attacks, and surviving increasingly difficult stages as the submarine progresses toward its objective.
Developed by Beam Software and published by Hi Tech Expressions in 1991, The Hunt for Red October adapts the film’s submarine-focused premise into a portable action experience for the Game Boy.
