The Sims 2: Pets is a stand-alone console life-simulation title developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts in October 2006. Unlike its PC counterpart, this version is an independent game built on the The Sims 2 console engine, set in the pet-centric neighborhood of Whiskerton. The title introduces domestic animals to the Sim universe, allowing players to adopt, raise, and customize cats, dogs, birds, and guinea pigs to enrich their digital households.
The gameplay is technically defined by the Create-a-Pet suite, which offers deep customization for over 20 cat breeds and 70 dog breeds, including the ability to design "designer mixes" like Labradoodles and Puggles. Players can use Direct Control Mode to navigate Sims manually with the analog stick or stick to the classic point-and-click cursor system. A significant departure from the PC version is the lack of aging; Sims and pets in this version do not grow old or die, though they can faint if their needs are severely neglected. To socialize, Sims can visit the Town Square, a dynamic community lot that expands with new shops like the Pet Bakery and Salon as players spend "Pet Points".
Technically, the PlayStation 2 version targets a stable 30fps at 480i resolution and supports EyeToy functionality for specialized in-game interactions. The game features an "Adoption" system where players can use the phone or visit the Town Square to add pre-made pets to their family, and it includes a unique "Share" feature where special codes can be used to unlock exclusive pet accessories, fur patterns, and markings. Managing a household requires careful balance, as untrained pets may dig in the yard or claw furniture unless disciplined and taught tricks like "Shake" or "Play Dead".
