In X-Men 2: Clone Wars, SEGA and Headgames delivered one of the most polished and technically impressive action-platformers on the Genesis. Released in 1995, the game immediately sets itself apart with a "cold start" intro: the moment you flip the power switch, you are dropped directly into a Siberian tundra mission with a randomly selected X-Man—no title screen or menus allowed until the first stage is cleared. The plot follows the X-Men as they team up with their arch-nemesis, Magneto, to stop the Phalanx, a technorganic alien race that is cloning mutants to assimilate Earth.
The gameplay significantly improved upon the 1993 original by removing the "mutant power meter," allowing players to use their special abilities (like Cyclops' optic blasts or Gambit's kinetic cards) as often as they like. Each of the seven playable characters features unique traversal and combat skills: Wolverine and Nightcrawler can climb walls/ceilings, Psylocke and Nightcrawler have double jumps, and Beast can cling to walls while delivering heavy melee damage. The game's soundtrack is also highly regarded for its gritty, electronic vibe that shifts slightly depending on which character you are currently controlling.
