Description
In Yoshi (known as Mario & Yoshi in PAL regions), the iconic green dinosaur makes his puzzle debut on the NES. Developed by Game Freak, this title marks an early landmark collaboration between Satoshi Tajiri and Nintendo. Unlike later platforming adventures, you control Mario as he stands at the bottom of the screen, swapping the positions of four rotating columns to catch falling tiles of classic enemies like Goombas, Boos, and Piranha Plants.
The gameplay revolves around the high-scoring egg shell mechanic. When a bottom egg shell appears, you can stack multiple enemies on top of it; landing a matching top shell then "sandwiches" the entire pile, hatching a Yoshi and clearing the column. The more enemies trapped within the shell, the larger the Yoshi produced and the higher the points awarded. You can test your endurance in A-Type mode or clear pre-set stages in B-Type. The experience is tied together by a catchy soundtrack from Junichi Masuda, whose style here would famously go on to define the music of the Pokémon series.
