Freedom Wings for Nintendo DS is a unique hybrid of aerial dogfighting action and RPG progression, delivering an immersive experience set in a world ruled by sky pirates and bounty hunters. Developed by Taito and published by Natsume, the game puts you in the cockpit of a customizable aircraft as you rise through the ranks of a freelance pilot seeking revenge and fortune in the open skies.
The gameplay blends real-time flight combat with role-playing mechanics. You'll engage in thrilling 3D dogfights, take on missions, and earn money to upgrade your plane's weapons, engines, armor, and avionics. As you progress, you'll unlock new aircraft models and customize your loadout to match your combat style—favoring speed, firepower, or agility.
Freedom Wings uses both screens of the DS to great effect: the top screen displays the 3D battlefield while the bottom touchscreen functions as a radar, instrument panel, and quick-access interface for targeting and flight control. The stylus and button inputs combine to give a surprisingly fluid sense of control, whether you’re chasing down bandits or evading enemy fire.
Story-wise, you play a young pilot who joins the fight against the infamous sky pirate organization that took everything from him. Along the way, you’ll build a reputation, interact with characters across various airfields, and uncover leads that bring you closer to your goal. The world is persistent and dynamic, with enemy pilots reacting to your reputation and flight habits.
