Space Invaders - Nintendo 64 updates the classic arcade shooter with enhanced graphics, new enemy formations, larger environments, and expanded gameplay while retaining the basic goal of defending Earth from waves of descending aliens. Players move a ground-based cannon across the bottom of the screen, firing upward at increasingly dangerous invaders while avoiding enemy attacks and protecting their remaining lives.
Gameplay builds on the original formula with multiple stages, different alien types, defensive barriers, weapon upgrades, and large boss encounters. Power-ups provide temporary advantages such as stronger weapons and additional firepower, while enemy patterns become more complex as players progress. The game also includes cooperative and competitive multiplayer options, allowing two players to take part in the alien invasion together or compete for higher scores.
Developed by Z-Axis and published by Activision in 1999, Space Invaders was part of a late-1990s revival of classic arcade properties on contemporary consoles.
