Summoner 2 is an ambitious action-RPG developed by Volition Inc. and published by THQ in 2002, serving as the sequel to the PlayStation 2’s landmark launch title. Set 20 years after the events of the original game, the story shifts focus to Maia, the Queen of Halassar, who is believed to be the goddess Laharah reborn. Unlike the first game's protagonist, Maia is a ruler burdened by prophecy, tasked with healing the Tree of Eleh to save the world from an encroaching darkness.
The gameplay moves away from the first game’s "chain-attack" rhythm system in favor of a fully real-time, action-oriented combat engine. Players control a party of up to three characters—choosing from a roster of eight unique companions like the Munari assassin Sangaril or the mechanical mystery Iari—and can switch between them instantly with a single button press. A core technical evolution is Maia's Summoning ability; rather than calling creatures to fight alongside her, Maia physically transforms into various powerful forms (such as the Blood Summon or Sand Summon) that possess their own specialized skill trees and stats.
Technically, Summoner 2 delivers a much more refined visual experience than its predecessor, featuring expansive 3D environments with a fully adjustable camera controlled by the right analog stick. The game targets a stable 30fps at 480i resolution and includes a "save anywhere" feature (outside of combat), a significant technical improvement for the genre at the time. It also features a robust Mythology menu, which acts as a dynamic codex that updates as players discover new lore, and supports Dolby Pro Logic II for immersive matrixed surround sound during its real-time exploration and cinematic cutscenes.
