.hack//Infection: Part 1 - PlayStation 2 begins the original .hack RPG saga and introduces Kite, a new player entering the virtual MMORPG known as The World. After a mysterious encounter leaves his friend Orca unconscious in the real world, Kite is drawn into an investigation involving corrupted areas, strange monsters, and events that suggest something inside the game is affecting players beyond the screen.
Players explore procedurally generated fields and dungeons, recruit party members, battle enemies in real time, and collect weapons, armor, and other equipment. The combat system combines direct action with party commands, while in-game email, message boards, news updates, and character interactions help create the feeling of participating in a living online community despite the game being a single-player RPG.
Developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai, .hack//Infection is the first chapter in the four-part PlayStation 2 series that continues through Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine. It establishes the central mystery surrounding Kite's Twilight Bracelet, the instability spreading through The World, and the growing connection between the game and the real world.
Please Note: .hack//Infection: Part 1 is the first chapter of the original .hack series and is the recommended starting point for the full story. Save data can be carried forward into .hack//Mutation: Part 2, allowing character progress and equipment to continue into the next installment.
