Saiyuki: Journey West - PlayStation is a tactical role-playing game inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Players follow Sanzo, a young monk chosen for a dangerous pilgrimage, as he travels across a fantasy world alongside companions based on legendary figures such as Son Goku, Gojo, and Hakkai. The story blends mythology, adventure, and character-driven drama with an anime-inspired presentation.
Gameplay centers on turn-based tactical battles fought across grid-based maps, where positioning, terrain, character abilities, and elemental affinities can influence each encounter. Party members gain experience, learn new skills, and can use powerful transformations and special techniques during combat. Between battles, players progress through story scenes, visit towns, manage equipment, and prepare the party for increasingly difficult encounters.
Developed by Koei and published in North America by Koei in 2001, Saiyuki: Journey West stands out as one of the more distinctive strategy RPGs in the original PlayStation library.
