Halo 2 - Xbox
Released on November 9, 2004, Halo 2 remains the most influential title in the history of the Xbox console. It didn’t just continue the story of the Master Chief; it redefined the first-person shooter genre by introducing matchmaking and a skill-ranking system that laid the blueprint for modern online gaming. The campaign famously shifted perspectives between Master Chief on Earth and Delta Halo, and the Arbiter—a disgraced Covenant Elite—offering players a look into the religious civil war tearing the Covenant apart from within.
The gameplay introduced mechanics that became series staples, most notably dual-wielding, which allowed players to carry two small firearms at the cost of being unable to throw grenades or melee. It also added vehicle boarding, allowing players to hijack enemy Ghosts and Wraiths in mid-combat. While the official Xbox Live servers for the original game were famously shut down in 2010, as of March 2026, the community has fully revived the original experience through projects like Insignia, which brings matchmaking and "the old-school lobby feel" back to original hardware.
