Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru for Game Boy (カエルの為に鐘は鳴る, Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru), often translated as For the Frog the Bell Tolls, is a unique action-adventure game released exclusively in Japan by Nintendo. The story follows Prince Sablé, a somewhat clumsy royal who sets out to rescue Princess Tiramisu after she is kidnapped by the villainous King Delarin.
Players explore towns, caves, castles, and wilderness areas across the kingdom while solving puzzles and gathering items that help advance the adventure. Instead of traditional manual battles, combat occurs automatically when enemies are encountered, with outcomes determined by Prince Sablé’s current abilities and conditions. Throughout the journey, the prince also gains the ability to transform into different forms—such as a frog or a snake—which opens new paths and puzzle-solving opportunities.
This game is also notable for its connection to The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Several members of the development team worked on both titles, and the transformation mechanics and character cameos carried over into Link’s Awakening, including the character Prince Richard and the frog transformation theme found in Mabe Village. Because of this shared development history, Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (カエルの為に鐘は鳴る) is often considered a fascinating companion piece to one of the most beloved Zelda games on the Game Boy.
