The story follows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as they set out to reclaim their stolen banana hoard from the Tiki Tak Tribe, a group of mysterious mask-like creatures that have taken over Donkey Kong Island. Their journey spans a wide range of environments, from lush jungles and tropical beaches to crumbling ruins and erupting volcanoes.
Gameplay focuses on classic side-scrolling platforming built around momentum, precise jumps, and environmental interaction. Players roll through enemies, swing across gaps, fire from barrel cannons, and navigate carefully designed stages filled with secrets and collectibles. Diddy Kong plays a key supporting role, providing a jetpack that allows for extended jumps and mid-air control.
