Widely considered one of the greatest entries in the franchise, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (MH4U) revolutionized the series by adding a sense of verticality that changed the hunt forever. You play as a customizable Hunter who joins a traveling caravan on a global expedition to uncover the secrets of a mysterious, shimmering relic. Unlike previous entries that stayed in one village, MH4U takes you across diverse locales—from the volcanic "Hollows" to the wind-swept "Ancestral Step"—while introducing a more cinematic story with a memorable cast of characters.
The gameplay's biggest innovation is the Mounting System, allowing you to jump off ledges or walls to perform aerial strikes and literally wrestle a monster to the ground. Two new weapon classes joined the roster: the Insect Glaive, which lets you pole-vault into the air and command a Kinsect to harvest buffs, and the Charge Blade, a complex morphing weapon that shifts between a sword-and-shield and a high-impact axe. While the official Nintendo servers were shut down in April 2024, in 2026, the community lives on through private servers like Pretendo, allowing the most dedicated hunters to still team up online.
