In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the long-running roguelike spin-off reaches its peak scale, featuring every single one of the 720 Pokémon discovered up to that point. Developed by Spike Chunsoft, the game follows the classic premise of a human transformed into a Pokémon, but sets itself apart with a surprisingly deep narrative involving a global crisis where Pokémon are mysteriously being turned into stone. The story begins with a charming "school life" segment in Serene Village before Samus—er, the player—joins the Expedition Society to map the world and solve the lithification mystery.
The gameplay introduces the Connection Orb, a massive constellation-like map that replaced the traditional random recruitment of previous games. By completing specific requests, you form permanent bonds with Pokémon, which in turn unlock their friends and relatives for your team. Combat is tactical and turn-based, enhanced by the addition of Mega Evolution and Looplets—customizable equipment that you can slot with Emeras (temporary power-up gems) to gain buffs like extra reach, status immunity, or the ability to see through walls.
