Heroes of Mana for Nintendo DS is a real-time strategy RPG set in the beloved world of Square Enix’s Mana series. Acting as a prequel to Seiken Densetsu 3 (also known as Trials of Mana), this entry shifts away from traditional action RPG combat and instead offers tactical, army-based gameplay that unfolds in real time across large, gridless maps.

You play as Roget, a young soldier whose loyalty is tested when he uncovers a dark conspiracy within his kingdom. As the story unfolds, you’ll command squads of units, summon elemental spirits, and manage battlefield resources to protect your allies and defeat enemy forces. The narrative features a large ensemble cast, branching alliances, and signature Mana world-building, all told through beautifully illustrated character portraits and text-driven cutscenes.

Combat takes place from a top-down perspective, where players summon different classes of units—such as melee fighters, ranged attackers, aerial units, and support casters—from a floating fortress known as the Nightswan. Managing your Mana energy, positioning, and unit composition is key to success, with elemental affinities and terrain also playing a role in strategic decisions.

Heroes of Mana makes excellent use of the DS’s touchscreen, allowing for intuitive unit selection, movement, and base management. While battles can become hectic, the pace is suited for handheld play, and RPG elements like leveling up heroes and equipping gear add depth beyond standard RTS fare.
