Description
Description
Rayman DS is a 3D platformer developed by DC Studios and published by Ubisoft as a launch window title for the Nintendo DS in March 2005. Technically, the game is a direct port of the 1999 classic Rayman 2: The Great Escape, specifically utilizing the level structure and sequenced soundtrack of the Nintendo 64 version. The narrative follows the limbless hero Rayman as he escapes from a Robo-Pirate prison ship and embarks on a quest to recover 1,000 Yellow Lums and four ancient masks to summon the world’s god, Polokus.
The gameplay utilizes the dual-screen hardware by moving the primary Heads-Up Display (HUD)—including health and Lum counters—to the bottom touchscreen, leaving the top screen dedicated entirely to the 3D action. Because the DS lacks an analog stick, the game introduces a virtual analog controller on the touchscreen, which allows players to use the stylus or a thumb strap for 360-degree movement and variable speed control. Rayman retains his signature moves across 45 levels, including the "helicopter" hair descent, magical energy fist attacks, and unique vehicle segments where he rides flying shells or water-skis behind a friendly sea snake.
Technically, Rayman DS runs at a native resolution of 256x192 pixels. While the game targets 60 frames per second, it is noted for an unstable framerate that can frequently dip during graphically intensive scenes or heavy combat. Unlike the Dreamcast or PlayStation 2 versions, this port does not include the "Globox Village" or additional minigames, focusing instead on a faithful translation of the original N64 experience. As of 2026, the game is a strictly single-player experience and remains a notable technical curiosity for being one of the few full 3D platformers available during the first year of the Nintendo DS's lifecycle.
