Monopoly Party is a fast-paced reimagining of the classic real estate board game, specifically developed to eliminate the "down-time" of traditional turn-based play. Developed by Runecraft and published by Infogrames in 2002, this title utilizes 3D graphics to animate a bustling center-board environment that changes based on the selected theme. Unlike standard adaptations, the console handles all banking and mathematical calculations automatically, significantly increasing the speed of the game compared to its physical counterpart.
The game’s primary innovation is the Party Mode, where all four players roll their dice and move their tokens simultaneously. This mechanic creates a high-stakes frenzy for property acquisition; if two players land on the same unowned space at the same time, it triggers an immediate auction to determine the owner. For purists, the game also includes a Classic Mode, which adheres strictly to the original turn-based rules of the 1935 board game. A built-in rules editor further allows players to customize their experience with popular house rules, such as doubling "Go" rewards or placing tax money on "Free Parking".
Monopoly Party features five distinct 3D-rendered themes that alter the appearance of properties, currency, and tokens. While the base costs of the board remain consistent, the visual style shifts dramatically between Sci-Fi (spaceships and robots), Fantasy (knights and wizards), Pre-History (dinosaurs and mammoths), Ancient Wonders (pyramids and chariots), and the traditional Classic board. Each theme includes custom-modeled tokens that replace the standard iron and top hat for a more immersive thematic experience.
