Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon for Nintendo Switch is a retro-inspired action platformer that serves as a prequel to the Bloodstained universe, drawing heavy inspiration from classic 8-bit Castlevania-style gameplay. Set in a dark, demon-infested world, the story follows Zangetsu, a cursed swordsman driven by revenge, as he hunts demons under the looming threat of a powerful moonlit curse. Unlike its later Metroidvania counterpart, this title focuses on tightly designed stages, deliberate combat, and old-school difficulty.
As the journey unfolds, Zangetsu encounters several allies, including the shardbinder alchemist Miriam, the whip-wielding exorcist Alfred, and the nimble vampire hunter Gebel. Players can recruit these characters and switch between them on the fly, each offering distinct abilities that affect combat and traversal. Decisions made throughout the adventure influence which companions remain by Zangetsu’s side, leading to multiple paths, endings, and gameplay variations. This branching structure adds replay value while reinforcing the game’s themes of fate, sacrifice, and conviction.
