In Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, players take control of the T-850—complete with the voice and likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger—to protect John Connor and Kate Brewster from the advanced T-X. Unlike the film, which begins in the present day, the first two-thirds of the game serve as an "Adaptation Expansion" set in the Future War of 2032. You must fight through Skynet’s scorched-earth frontlines to reach a time-displacement chamber and travel back to 2003 to fulfill your mission.
The gameplay is primarily a first-person shooter, but it periodically shifts into a third-person fighting game whenever you confront another machine, such as a rogue T-800 or the T-X herself. These one-on-one brawls focus on combos, blocks, and throws. For the FPS segments, the game features a unique "Lock-on" targeting system designed to mimic the Terminator's robotic HUD, which helps compensate for the period's erratic analog aiming. Despite featuring high-production live-action movie footage and hidden Atari classics like Missile Command, the game received criticism for its short length and "drab" level design.
